MY STORY OF INVENTING RAIVES

While working at UC Davis Medical Center, I witnessed firsthand how unorganized bedside medical equipment compromised hospital safety and overall productivity.

The issue became apparent when I was assisting a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). I tripped over a cable connected to the patient, causing me to fall and the cable to become dislodged. After this incident, I began noticing that other hospital staff—particularly ICU nurses—were regularly dealing with the same issue, often referred to as “Spaghetti Syndrome.” To manage the tangled equipment, staff resorted to improvised, non–hospital-approved solutions made from tourniquets, popsicle sticks, and tape. I realized that if “Spaghetti Syndrome” was a problem at UC Davis Medical Center, it was likely affecting healthcare facilities everywhere.
